Storm Lake, Iowa Area Guide

A greeting from Storm Lake, Iowa’s hidden treasure! Nestled in the heart of northwest Iowa, Storm Lake offers 3,200 acres of recreation and excitement. Storm Lake holds the county seat of Buena Vista County, and this agricultural area is expanding rapidly. Shopping, fabulous restaurants and a relaxing atmosphere are just a few of the wonderful activities you’ll enjoy in this beautiful city.

Parks and Recreation

There are 200 acres of city parks located on the shores here that give residents and visitors access to the huge lake. The Lake Trail runs through all of the parks and allows walkers, joggers, and cyclists to enjoy serene views of the waterfront. Walleye and Catfish fishing are popular in the state and camping is also available near the water at the Sunrise Campgrounds. Boat ramps and docks are also available for public access, as well as several picnic areas and playgrounds for your family to enjoy. Volleyball, tennis courts and basketball courts are also available in the parks.

Events and Attractions

Storm Lake is home to many exciting events and attractions. A visit to Storm Lake wouldn’t be complete without a stop by the Buena Vista Historical Museum or the King’s Pointe Water Park. View the list below for more activities perfect for everyone in your family!

Star Spangled Spectacular
Every year over 30,000 people come to enjoy the 4th of July festivities in Storm Lake. The night before Independence Day, an old-fashioned ice cream social is held with live entertainment in the park. The next day residents can enjoy the 150-float Big Parade traveling alongside the lake, see Artists Alley, see performances on three stages and see the beautiful reflections on the water of the amazing fireworks display overhead.

Buena Vista Historical Museum
Housed in a building built to assemble Ford automobiles in 1916, the Buena Vista Historical Museum allows visitors a rare glimpse into early prairie living with the permanent “Pioneer Main Street” display. The rest of the museum changes exhibits throughout the year, with previous displays including early automobiles, fashions and circus memorabilia.

King’s Pointe Water Park
This 17,000 square foot water park is enclosed entirely indoors and offers the convenience of climate control no matter what the weather is like outside. There are three water slides that wind through the entire park! Bring the whole family for a day of wet fun!
