Sitting between Sioux City and Fort Dodge, Schaller is perfectly situated to maintain its small town charm while being able to offer big city amenities. When you visit Schaller, one of the first things you’ll notice is the friendliness of our residents. Some people have lived here their entire lives and welcome new faces the way they do the ones they’ve seen for years, with a smile and a handshake.

Proud of the services it offers its residents, Schaller hosts a public library, volunteer fire department and offers a great educational system with schools from Kindergarten through 8 th grade, sharing with Early, IA.

History

Named for Phil Schaller, the little town that began life as a station for a railroad under construction was founded in 1879. The economy was based then, as it is now, on commercial support for the farms in the surrounding area, with settlers coming mostly from Germany, England, Canada, New York and eastern Iowa.

Major industries in Schaller were two companies making one of America’s favorite snacks, Bango and Jolly Time popcorn, the size of them earning the town its nickname “The Popcorn Capital of the World.” Even though the company headquarters made the move in the 1980’s, American Pop Corn purchases their product from farmers who work more than 20,000 acres in Iowa and Nebraska. Even today there is a popcorn festival, with great fun had by both residents and visitors.

Heritage Tree Museum

 Located in Sunset Park, the Storm Lake Heritage Tree Museum is a unique educational and recreational attraction for residents and visitors alike. The museum is an eclectic collection of trees that have their heritage in the history of the United States and the world. Free and open to the public throughout the year, the best times to visit are summer and fall to enjoy the sights.

Sioux City Public Museum

Preserving the heritage of Sioux City through exhibitions and educational programs and events, the Sioux City Public Museum dates back to the 1850’s when a group of local citizens for a collective as the Sioux City Lyceum to collect natural science specimens from the area. This eventually evolved into the Academy of Science and Letters, its focus becoming more historical. In 1938, Sioux City established the Sioux City Public Museum, incorporating all the collections from the Academy.
